Can i get a better video card for my MAC?

i have a mac power pc g4 with 2 gigs of ram and a radeon ATI Radeon 9000 Pro with 32mb of video ram

i play world or warcraft and it doesnt run very well i was woundering if their is a better card i could buy that would work for this mac?

its a agp slot if that helps|||yes just look for a mac edition video card

I need a computer to edit digital video. I like Macs, but don't like the prices and video cards confuse me!?

I wonder if I can get a mac mini and have it do what I need. I want to edit my home movies and watch stuff on you tube. How big of a graphics cards do I need without going broke?|||You'll be fine with an integrated card.|||You should first look at the digital video editor software programs out there first. Find what you want/need first. Some may only be available for a Mac or PC.

After you decide on the software, then check the System Requirements for the software. That will tell you what video card, memory, processor, etc, you need.

Once you have your system requirements, then you can look for a computer that matches or exceeds these requirements.

Would this mac’s video card be ok for me?

I was looking at macs and I found this Imac:

http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Desktop-Display-MA877LL-SuperDrive/dp/B000R81W7U/ref=pd_bbs_sr_6?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1215302991&sr=8-6

It has a 256MB video card and that will run all of my games. Most of my games only require 64MB and only a few of my games require a 128MB so this card will be fine for what I do now. If I buy a mac I want it to last at lest 5-10 years so I’m a little concerned about that video card because the technology in games are advancing and I can’t upgrade the video card. My favorite genre of game is strategy (my all time favorite game is civilization IV) and I don’t think strategy games will ever be considered the best in graphics. So do you think this mac’s video card would be ok for me?|||lol. 5-10 years is pretty optimistic. computer technology approximately doubles in capacity every 2 years (moore's law)

This has been true for the last 30 years.

the machine has an ati radeom 2600 pro which is a slower chipset than the 8600gt commonly considered a low end card in PC's.

If you are a gamer, this machine is really not much good as far as "future-proofing" goes.

Probably not the answer you were looking for but it would be a shame for you to spend $1200 and find its a paperweight as far as playing games in 1-2 years time.

You can get macs with an 8800gt or gs (the gt is better). this would be a better fonfiguration to look at if you want gaming longevity.|||it maybe but idk because the games r going to change so much in the next 5-10 years. you need a new computer like every 3 years now to even try to stay with the latest technology to support everything. Its just to hard to say.

Do i need a video card for my mac if i want to play a game?

i want to buy the sims for my mac and i was wondering if i needed to add a video card or anything like that. this will be the first game i buy for my mac so im not sure if i already have the video card or not is there anyway i can find out btw i havent added any chips or anything like that since i bought my mac|||yes, but your computer comes with one already, and the only need to get another is if the game demands more.|||Any computer, whether it's a PC or Mac, needs a video card.

Yes, you might need to change/upgrade your video card to play graphic intense games.

Can you change the video card on a mac mini?

I need a new computer and really want to change to mac. However, I need my research and found that I won't be able to play The Sims 3 on it because the graphics card is not supported and does not work with those types of games.|||MAC OSX in general doesn't support a lot of gaming. If you ask me, unless you absolutely need the MAC for some unreasonable functionallity, it's not worth the sticker price. But to answer your question, not it won't work natively if you swap cards because the way the OS is developed. Your OS when first shipped on that MAC contains a hardware profile and if you attempt to replace a part that is not exactly the same as the previous, it freaks out (won't turn on). You have to alter the OS hardware profiles in a fashion to where you're actually able to perform mods like that in most cases.

Edit: Tallest Skil, there is no reason to treat people like dog sh*t just because they are unware of features or support for a system. Be reasonable. If you're going to act like that, then don't answer the question out of dignity.|||Sorry, the Mini has an integrated video card. The only parts you can change are the hard drive and RAM. Having done this myself, I can confirm that it's a pain. I repair computers for a living and normally replacing the HD and RAM takes me 5 minutes. On my Mini, it took nearly an hour, most of it spent swearing. For once I thought about just paying someone to do it for me.

Unfortunately Macs aren't much for gaming and the Mini is the cheapest one for a reason. You might check the iMac line to see if any of them will meet the specs.|||No, of course not. Have you even looked at a Mac Mini? There are no cards small enough to fit in the case, and it's not even a CARD. It's a chip that is soldered to the logic board.

AND YES, IT FRICKING DOES WORK WITH THE SIMS THREE. My gosh, are you really that dense? You even had the specs to compare side by side and you think that it doesn't work? PATHETIC.

IT. WORKS. FRICK'S SAKE.|||No, the graphics chip is soldered to the logic board.

How to correctly install a mac video card?

i'm trying to install a tablet and it's not working. the only other explanation i can think of is that i do not have the correct video card. suggestions?|||Alex, to answer your question with accuracy more information is needed.

When you say you're trying to install a tablet, what tablet, make and model? Assuming the computer you are using is a Mac, what Mac and Mac OS are being used?

***Edit***

Alex take a look at the video offered for setup video at Wacom. Also check the 2nd link for the most recent driver for the tablet. Be certain to choose the appropriate driver. 10.4.x Tiger; 10.5 Leopard; 10.6.x is Snow Leopard and 10.7.x is Lion. Can't point to the specific driver given Max OS X refers to 4 different Mac OS's but the site looks pretty simple to use.

Do Apple Mac Book Pros come with a graphics/ video card?

I'm buying the latest 13 inch Apple Mac Book Pro, but i'm also wanting to buy PC games compatible with a Mac.... Most PC games require a graphics or video card.... Does an Apple Mac Book Pro come with a graphics card already on it or do I have to buy one separately to be able to play games like Sims 3|||If they didn't have a video "card", they wouldn't be able to display anything on the screen.

The details of the graphics chips they are are on the tech specs page on the apple website: http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/specs-13… (Intel HD Graphics 3000 with 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory).

As they are laptops, you can't fit a replacement graphics card - there isn't room.

Note that you'll need to get Mac versions of any games you want to play, or install Windows on the Mac.|||The current generation of Macbook Pro 13 has an Intel HD 3000 for graphics. While this is not a gaming GPU, and is considered pretty much "entry level" in power, it is capable of running simple to mid level graphics on games currently. It can handle Sims 3 fine. The Macbook Pro 15 and 17 have actual dedicated AMD/ATI Radeon GPUs which are much better for gaming.. but the Intel HD 3000 can handle most games, you just have to run smaller resolutions and less pretty graphics options inside the game sometimes. In the years to come you'll be pretty much running all newer games on very low settings in order to play.

Playing games made for Mac OS X is easy (like Sims 3), but if you want to run games made only for MS Windows, you can still do it, but it will be more difficult.

You can use Bootcamp assistant (already on your Mac) to set up a dual boot and buy a licensed copy of Windows and set it up where you can run either Mac OS X or Windows when you turn on the machine. When booted up into Windows, you won't be able to access Mac OS X, but it will be just like a normal Windows PC.

Myself, I only boot into Windows to play a game if I have no choice in the matter. Many games you can find 3rd party hobbyist ports of, or port them yourself... Theres a good community that deals with that sort of thing over on the forums at The Porting Team... heres a few more links about things like that.

Compatible graphics / video card for a MAC?

My first question is, are all graphics cards compatible with a Macbook laptop or just some? If not, how do i know if a graphics cards compatible if my Mac laptop (Rev.f) if it has:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo at 2.1 GHz 800 MHz FSB, 3 MB L2 cache

Memory: (2x1GB ram) 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Storage: 120 GB with BTO options for up to 250 GB at 5,400 rpm

Graphics: GMA X3100 (graphics card) 144 MB shared memory|||You cannot change the graphic cards in laptops the are usually integrated of soldered in, only a few high performance laptop can take new graphics cards, a Mac is not one of these.

What is a good Video card for Macintosh?

Ok, I need to know if theres a video card out there under $500, that can run shader effects on world of warcraft, and gives very good performance, the blizzard compatibility list has only 3 of the RADEON cards listed, i dont know if those are the only 3 i can use that will be compatible? I recently bought a RADEON 9200 and its running "W.O.W."really crappy, worse than my factory card runs it..

I'm real lost when it comes to this stuff, so maybe someone can suggest a good one if they have a mac, and play warcraft?

How do I clear my video card on a mac?

I run a Mac OSX 10.4.11 and lately the video's have been streaming in a very inconsistent way.

For example, I only see stills of certain parts of a video, or it will freeze up for a half second, every other second.

I am hoping this is just a problem with my video card. I don't live near a mac store, I MUST do this myself. Can anyone tell me what to do?|||You don't "clear" video cards as they don't store anything on them (like how hard drives do). Eventually they do break down (just like a hard drives crashes), so if anything you would have to go the the Apple store and get a new one.|||As was already said, you don't/can't "clear" the video card or anything of that sort. It's most likely a problem somewhere else (probably software). We need a few more details before we can really help though.

How are you watching these videos? Are they on a DVD, on the Internet (like YouTube) or did you download them somehow?

Do you know what the name of the program or application you are using to watch them is?|||it might not be the video card. it maybe you have low ram try stoping some programs or upgrade your ram. oh and a piece of advice upgade to mac os x 10.6(snow leopard)n its pretty awsome it olny cost like 40-50 dollors to upgage your O.S.|||Macs...They Just Work.

I have a power mac g5 that needs a video card, what can i do?

Best Specifications for Apple Mac for professional video editing?

Hello,

I am starting up a business editing wedding, music and corporate videos.

I am saving to buy an apple mac and was hoping someone could tell me the best spec to aim for (RAM, memory size, video card etc...) so final cut, after effects and photoshop all run extremely fast and the monitor gives a high quality display?|||It really depends on your budget. You'll likely want to go with an iMac ($1199 and up) or a Mac Pro (if money is no object, starts at $2500US without monitor). The more you spend the better things will run and the longer the computer will be useful.

Processor: quad core is better if you do a lot of rendering, to get it you'll need to go from the $1699 model to the $1999 one but you'll also get a significant video card upgrade at the same time

RAM: 4Gb is the best bang for the buck currently (another $200US gets you 8Gb though)

Hard drive: 1Tb isn't bad ($250US more gets you 2Tb which might be worth it if you have a lot of video)

monitor: it's built-in, the $1999 model has a 27" display /w LED backlit IPS panel, very good quality as is the 21.5" display on the cheaper models

Flash evga GeForce 6200 256mb pci video card 256p1n399dx for mac?

I have a power mac g4 mdd and i want to upgrade the video card to the 6200. I found this http://xenomorph.net/apple/flash-pc-video-cards-for-use-in-a-mac/ that features the XFX “WANG” GeForce 6200, 256 Megs RAM but am unsure if the .rom will work because of the different brand.|||Yes you can try for that..

I want to buy a Mac but I also want a good gaming rig. Can I upgrade the new Mac's video cards, RAM, etc.?

I usually put new components in my PC and I want to know if I can do the same with a Mac. I also want to know if I can dual-boot Vista and Leopard on the same drive or if I need a secondary drive or, if its even possible.|||You want a gaming rig? No luck with the MAC. First off, even if you get your MAC upto snuff with the hardware, good luck trying to find any games (good ones at least) as they jut do not make them.

you can upgrade your MAC but only with proprietary hardware from MAC or certified MAC parts. RAM, VIDEO Sound, and HDD. That's it! Well your CPU if you buy an adapter which costs an arm and a leg.

As far as running vista and OSX Sure! You can use boot camp for this. If your MAC has a pentium chip ofcourse.

Good luck!|||video cards and ram and all that can be upgraded, but not motherboard, and most games require to you to buy ported versions to play them on macs, pc versions don't work on macs.

you can dual boot vista and leopard, you can even do it on the same drive by partitioning it, but make sure the drives and partitions are big enough, i wouldn't recommend that though, you should use 2 drives.|||I'd buy one of these:

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/5…|||You want to talk to a representative through Apple Store Chat on their website. They should be able to tell you what you need to know. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC743Z…

There are two other ways to do things, but involve risk and more effort. The first is to buy a used mac compatible graphics card or a pre-flashed PC graphics card (the Mac firmware has been applied to a PC card by someone else). eBay is a good source for such things and they can be cheap options. The Radeon 4870 and Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 were last generation's graphics cards, I wouldn't go further back than that in technology.

The most complex option is to flash a PC card yourself. You need a PC and some technical ability, but it is just a case of understanding and following instructions - this lets you save a lot of money or use cards that aren't available on the Mac such as newer Radeon 6000 series cards. The Mac Pro sub-forum over at macrumors.com has a wealth of information on such things if you aren't happy with the two official Apple options.|||you can go to apple.com and see there forums with old tech specs and upgradeable products also if you click on the apple button and click about this computer and then more information you can see your current card and computer limits

networking and wi-fi tend to be the sticking points, but I'll take a guestimate that the TV card wont as the tend to be wierd in driver region(mine has probs running on windows half the time) and i wouldnt want to guess if my grpahics dont work, but youve not given us any specs whihc can make it hard.

Still pretty weak, but better than 9400M at playing games. Get it if you want to play games on your Mac.

Can I add a video card to my system even though I have an integrated Intel HD Graphics chip?

Running a Dell Inspiron 580. Got the PC for the family but would like to run some games for myself. The Intel HD Graphics are decent but not powerful enough to run the better games. Will I run into lots of issues trying to install a new video card on this integrated chip? Or will it be as simple as dropping in a new card? I'm a MAC guy and this if my first PC. Any help would be great!

Thanks|||Presuming that your motherboard has a PCI Express x16 slot, all you do is install the new card. Be aware though that there is a 99% chance you will also have to upgrade your power supply in order to power the new card. Manufactured computers come with PSUs that are lower end usually and are designed to only barely power what your system came with and very little power is needed to run your current integrated Intel GMA|||Yes. You can but you should uninstall the integrated drivers before you install the card. Sometimes when you install a graphics card it may conflict with the integrated drivers, so I would disable the integrated graphics after you install the card. Also if you upgrade to a power hungry graphics card, you will have to buy a new Power supply.

http://www.dell.com/ca/p/inspiron-580/pd if this is your computer, what graphics card will you get?|||Sure, though make sure to see if you have the proper slot for the vid card. And it's possible you might have to disable the integrated graphics in BIOS (but that's not hard, and many motherboards have an "auto" feature).|||Yes you usually can, if and only if, the power supply is large enough to run the video card you wish to install....|||Toss in a video card and let 'er go. The Radeon 5870 will also work ($449 from Apple) and is the most powerful card that runs under OS X.

For memory you want to buy DDR2 667MHz FB-DIMMs. If you buy from somewhere like OWC, Transintl or Crucial you can't really go wrong. You can use any standard hard drives with your system.

Are memories and video cards for PC compatible with Mac?

Memory is. Graphics, that's another story. I do know that both ATi and nVidia provide graphics cards to Apple. However, I am not aware of an off the shelf card that comes with drivers for OSX. But, since ATi and nVidia both use unified drivers (more in the case of nVidia) then I suppose if you have an ATi graphics card or a nVidia card already then in theory you could pop a new one in and have it work. That's only a guess on my part. Neither ATi nor nVidia provide OSX drivers on their website. You're best off asking someone in an Apple store but I know what their answer would be. It couldn't hurt to try, you can always send the card back.

If I had a Mac Pro (thinking about getting one for a variety of reasons), I'd do all my gaming on it in Windows anyway. So having an extra gaming-only video card in the machine would be sweet. Does this type of setup work?|||I don't you'd be able to fit it in one...Not only that, these cards are largely Window based so you'd have to wait a while. I'm not really sure how Apple structures their motherboard, but from what I seen, I don't think you can customize it. I doubt there's even a PCI-E slot there or if the power supply will sustain either cards. Secondly...there's no such thing as an gaming only card. These cards are made for performance. Dual video cards for the mac?

Hey this is a question for the mac users

I was wondering if there is an advantage in having dual video cards and im not talking about dual monitors. 2 video cards inside the mac. is there a speed test out there on the net? Im asking because i want to know for a video/3d animation editor for a macpro is there an advantage in having dual video cards each one being nvidia geforce 7300gt 256mb or is it better to have one video card the ati radeon x1900 xt 512mb. I want to find out which one would make render time faster|||To get greater speed by coupling two video card together Windows computers have two choices. They can use either SLI mode with NVIDIA video cards or Crossfire mode with ATI Radeon video cards. In addition with either approach you need two PCI express X16 slots on the motherboard; two identical video cards that support either SLI or Crossfire; and a motherboard that supports either SLI or Crossfire.

The Mac does not support SLI and Crossfire technology with its motherboard; Macs don’t have the chipset. Therefore for the maximum speed use the fastest single video card your Mac supports.

Is it possible to run two nvidia gforce 8800 video cards in SLI on a Gigabyte EP45 motherboard using a mac os?

I have snow leopard on my Gigabyte and i know it is possible for sli support with a Windows OS, but i was wondering if it was possible on a Mac OS?|||Unfortinatly no. Macs are uncustomizeable besides ram.

This is what gets some people peeved about macs, they can't have extra stuff like HDD's or new processors or GPUs, in the foreseeable future apple might make MAC desktop's so that's a pro. But for now macs aren't customizeable, but if you have a mac desktop try it open it up then look if there's two or more GPU slots if there is buy an extra one and try it.|||I read the other answer and had to pause... What...???

We are not talking about Macs, we are talking about OS X. Nonetheless, the idea that a Mac Pro is not customizable is silly. You can add multiple video cards, up to four internal hard drives, and up to 32GB of RAM. Early Macs could use multiple monitors long before any PC.

Nothing about OS X limits using SLI. It is up to NVidia to provide drivers for OS X... and they don't. Without SLI drivers, no SLI.

The card you mention isn't a gaming quality card.

It's designed for general use with a specific H.264 decoder for faster web video.

Ironically, gaming simulations are the hardest jobs we ask computers to do.

And to do them well you need a big Graphical Processing Unit.

The video card in the iMac can't be as easily swapped out as you can do with the Mac Pro.

But apparently a few people have figured it out, at least on the 24" model.

Unfortunately you have to be pretty tech savvy even to try it.

However, if you download smcfancontrol maybe you can ramp up the fans to reduce the heat problem.

What is the best configuration for either a Mac or Windows computer to edit HD video?

What sorts of processors, RAM, video card, etc. should I be looking at? I want to know my best options before I buy something that wouldn't do the job. Should I go Apple or Windows?|||Mac vs. PC eh, well if you don't like tinkering with your computer, learning all about hardware options and admin tasks and just want to be a computer user then the Mac is better choice. If you don't mind being a computer hobbyist, and spending time figuring things out and are trying to minimize your costs then a Windows PC is a better choice.

As for specs, look at the system requirements for the software you're planning to use as a starting point. Editing video is a compute intensive task so you'll want to get as much power as you can afford. The iMac or Mac Pro desktop machines are preferred over laptops.

The system requirements for your software will tell you what you need today, your budget will determine how long the computer you purchase will last. A quad-core CPU iMac with 4Gb RAM and discrete video card will be a good option if you can afford it.|||Any mac pro configuration can handle what you are doing. If you can afford the dual processor 8 core config, it would give you more longevity as things change / upgrade.

If you're getting an older Mac Pro, get as much ram as you can

If you're getting a new mac pro, get memory in banks of 3 to take advantage of triple channel ram.

As you're running a dedicated video card in a mac pro, any will do ok. Personally I'd either look at the 4870 series radeon or the 8800gt (thats the higher end card from the early 08)

I'd probably go cheap on the HD's and just get one apple drive then populate with my own additional drives - HD's are cheap =)

both FCE and FCP will edit HD video and use multiple cores. FCP will give you more flexibility due to its greater set of features and controls. FCP is part of Final Cut Studio which has a lot of wonderful tools in it.

My system config handles 1080i without issue in my current editor (fce since I can't afford FCS atm). I use lightroom w/ stills from various cameras, and many times I have FCE, lightroom, itunes and safari open and have no problems editing my video footage. And I'm using an early '08 8 core w/ 8 gig ram, 1tb boot, 2x 320 aux drives (1 for scratch, 1 for putting things until I find a better place ), 1x 400 gig drive (bootcamp drive) and a DROBO w/ 2.6 TB worth of drives for external storage.

Basically, I'm saying you can get just about any mac pro config. The single quad core will be close in power to what I have ( a little less on some things, a little more on others based upon the numbers I've seen), but the dual quad core allows for more ram and really, a longer life as newer software comes out that may take more advantage of more cores|||About 8gb of RAM and quad core processor

Can I use more than one video card on my Mac?

I want to use more than 2 monitors. I was thinking about getting an AGP video card and a PCI video card. Will this work? I have the 2.3 Dual G5. Please provide a link to back up your claims.

Thanks|||You can add as many cards as you have slots, and usually, you can support two displays per card.

If you look at the first link below, Apple's "Power Mac G5 Technology Overview, October 2005", page 19 says:

---------

Support for Multiple Displays

Every Power Mac G5 graphics card supports two displays in extended desktop and video mirroring modes. Extended desktop mode lets you distribute work across two displays, allowing more room for viewing rich content and complex applications that use floating palettes and long timelines. For example, you can view Final Cut Pro on one display while watching the video output on the other. Video mirroring mode outputs the same information on both displays, which means you can control a presentation from one display while the audience watches it on a second display or projected image.

The possibilities get even more interesting when you connect more than two displays. For maximum productivity, extend your desktop across up to eight displays.

---------

That last line sounds pretty clear to me!

There's also a MacNN discussion at the 2nd link [2].

You should already have an AGP video card, so you'll need PCI video cards for the other slots. I'm not sure the card I linked below [3] will work for you, but if it will, it's a darn good price for an ATI Technologies RADEON 9200 128MB MacEdition PCI card.|||thanks. are there any with two DVIs not one DVI and VGA?

|||Sorry about that i miss read the question, yous asking if it's possible to have 3 or more monitors in your mac, and to my knowledge it's not possible on that motherboard. you could get a PCI card but it's not possible to run an AGP and PCI card together. and their is no PCI card on the market that is Crossfire or SLI compatible.

::Original Answer::

From what i seen the 2.3 Dual G5 has a NVIDIA GeForce 6600 with 256MB GDDR3 SDRAM on a 16 lane PCI Express card, which can handle duel monitors with out the need for a second video card.

Dual Video Card using only one monitor, Mac?

On Windows, you can use a dual video card, and only have one monitor connected and it function perfectly normal. Is this not possible on Mac? Is the only solution to remove the dual video card and install a single one?|||This dual videocard setup is called either SLI or Crossfire

it depends on what company made it (nVidia or ATI)

they act the same though

it joins 2 videocards to make the power 1.9x more powerful than just 1 single one.

it is not possible on a Mac since Macintosh does not have a SLI or Crossfire compatible motherboard

nevermind, change that

you can have up to 4 videocards on the Mac Pro

but you have to pay a lot of money just for it

and the video cards arn't worth it|||you don't have to have both of them hooked up, I'm only using a 24" right now with my G5, but I can hook up two if I want to

Do the PowerPC Mac Minis have a decent video card to watch online videos without lag?

It could be either the 1.25GHz model or the 1.42GHz. I want to get one soon but I don't want to get one and see that it is not what I expect on the video card. Or should I get the Intel Core Solo at least. No I do not want to buy a new one or get the Intel Core 2 Duo. Please help anyone who has one. Thanks for all answers. :)|||The first-generation Mac Minis have no problem with streaming video off the Web. You can do that just fine on a fast G3, in fact.

The only thing you need to be aware of is that the PPC-based models are moving out of support by Apple. You can't run anything higher than Mac OS X 10.5 on it; 10.6 or higher is going to be Intel-only, and even software developers are moving away from that platform. For example, there's no official support for Mozilla Firefox 4 or higher on PPC now.

Given those circumstances, unless I was getting the PPC Mac Mini dirt cheap, I would hold out for an Intel model. A Core Solo is actually a good option if you find one cheap, because it's well-known that these can be upgraded to a much faster Core Duo or even a Core 2 Duo if you don't mind tinkering. Not to mention that any Intel-based Mac is going to be supported for the future.

Difference in these two ATI video cards for mac?

thinking about upgrading my mac... my current g5 has the 9800 xt. will the imac with the HD 4850 be a noticeable difference?

ATI Radeon 9800 XT with 256MB of DDR SDRAM (2005)

vs.

ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB

is the performance increase between these two cards small, medium, or large?|||It is really the 9800 GTX+ that is comparable to the HD 4850.

Performance difference would be significant at high resolution. 256MB graphics memory would bottleneck the 9800XT (and most other cards) at high resolution.|||the latter is 4 generations ahead aka more power

and it has a unified shader architecture aka more effiency|||the 4850 is much much faster than the 9800xt. karz, i have no idea why the hell you're talking about 9800gtx+, the 9800xt is an old ati card from years ago, nothing to do with nvidia's 9 series.

How to install a new video card to a windows monitor? and work..?

I have a Windows Vista, don't really know the detail because im using mac right now, but I want to change the video card to play Civ 5. I don't really know that much when it comes to computer hardware. So how would I install it, how do I know I got the right one, and Is there a certain type only for windows or do they all work?|||I lot of the details depend on your particular configuration, so the general guidelines I'm about to discuss may need to be modified for your particular configuration.

First, you need to buy a compatible graphics card. If your computer and/or motherboard are fairly modern, then you need a PCI-Express card. However, it is possible that you need an AGP card. As for which graphics card to buy, since you know what game you want to play, I would look at the recommended graphics specifications for Civilization V, and buy a card at least as good as that.

Second, you need to install the card. The first step is to turn off your computer. I would also unplug it from the wall, just to be safe. If your computer uses built-in graphics from the motherboard, then you just have to install the graphics card in the appropriate slot. Then you disconnect your monitor from its previous location and then connect to the new graphics card. Then you just need to plug your computer back in and turn it on. If you don't see an image, then I would plug the monitor back into its original location. If you see an image, then this means that you probably need to go into the BIOS and tell your computer to use slot graphics card before using on-board graphics. If your computer already has slot graphics, then you have to remove the old card and replace it with the new card. The same general rules apply as discussed above.

Third, you have to install the new drivers. It is likely that Vista will default to using a generic driver that is good enough for you to see your desktop. However, you will likely want to install the drivers that come with the card. They will usually come on a disk. Generally speaking you put the disk into your CD drive and follow the on-screen instructions.

I hope this helps.|||Since you know so little you should take your computer to a computer store and ask them what video cards will fit in your computer and will play the game. Sounds like that will work the best for you.

~

There is a wide range of prices so you will need to decide what you want to spend.|||2 types

AGP old systems

PCI(e) new systems

you need to find out what slots you have on the motherboard

being a vista system my guess would be pcie x16

so almost any graphics card will work

get 1024 mb off inboard ram

NVidia 9800gt or newer modal

ATI radeon 5800 series|||Ask the question again, this time, put your computer model in it. You want to make sure you have a PCI-E slot. and yes, all cards work with windows.

Can i upgrade the bundled video card on my power mac g5?

can i add an nVidia agp video card?|||only if it has the needed slot for it. If it has PCI-Express then get a PCI-E video card,|||What mac model do you have?|||Does it have an AGP slot? What would happen if I put a PC video card in a Mac?

Just for kicks... what happens if I put a PC video card in a Mac? Seriously, will it simply not function at all? Will it have limited capabilities? Will it totally freak-out and fry?

The reason I ask is because I have a Mac G5 with an AGP video card port. The card I currently have is just okay at best (256mb) but no where near what I'd like. Video cards for Macs (especially for AGP) are pretty hard to find, especially if you want more than a 256mb capacity. However on the PC side you can practically find them anywhere.

So please, without any smart comments on how I need to buy a new machine or ditch my Mac for a PC, I would seriously like to know what would happen if I go and buy a new AGP PC video card and put it in my Mac?|||Nothing. You'd get no video out of it whatsoever. It'll boot up, but you won't be able to do anything. Furthermore, 256MB is the absolute most you're going to get in that thing. The absolute fastest you'd ever find is a 7800GS, and the only way you'll get one of those is on eBay. You CANNOT get anything better than that, period. There were a limited number of cards that were made available for the G5. Heck, the 7800GS was actually a hacked card. Someone tweaked the 7800GTX PCIe ROM from the last line of G5s and made it work when flashed onto an AGP card.

Furthermore, why even bother? What do you need to do on a G5 that would require something with more than 256MB of VRAM? It's not like the G5 can play modern games. It's old and slow by modern standards, perhaps keeping up with low-end Core 2 Duos. Don't bother dumping money into that thing.

You aren't getting it. Unless you want to completely write a ROM and a driver from the ground up (which means a load of reverse engineering), it is NOT POSSIBLE. PERIOD. END OF STORY. It doesn't matter whether you believe it or not. PowerPC drivers/ROMs are very different from the Intel drivers/ROMs. They are not interchangeable. At all. The ATI X1900/Nvidia 7800 lines are as far as Apple went on PowerPCs. You CANNOT go further. To refuse to believe it does nothing but show a vast ignorance of how this sort of thing works. Why the hell would anyone dump that kind of herculean effort into a 6+ year old platform that doesn't even have support from the manufacturer anymore, much less the bulk of software vendors?

World of Warcraft and Laptop Video Cards?

Good Afternoon,

Well, after a good run, I'm afraid that I am going to have to retire my Gen 1 Mac Book Pro Battery can't keep a charge. Mobo overheats and shuts off laptop...can't have it on my lap because I'll lose layers of skin. None the less, I think it's time she gets retired.

That being said, I will need to pick up a new laptop to replace the Mac (I'll just use it as the "desktop" for home). Here's a bit of what I'm looking for: I'm an accomplished business professional that requires mobility to survive-most of the work use is for MS Office programs and the occasional MS Project or Visio document. I use the internet/chat world constantly. Also, here's the catch folks, I'm an avid gamer.

So, lightweight..smaller screen size would be nice with cam/mic...good graphics card, memory to help drive any shared card memory if needed, HDD space. I think those are the most important to me. Price is of course a factor: if I'm going to spend over $1500 on a PC Laptop, might as well get a Mac.

Does anyone have any laptop suggestions or more information to share about good laptop choices that would fit my needs OR can tell me what laptop video cards are out there that run World of Warcraft on a viable graphic level without suffering the performance of the machine?

Thanks!! :)

Video Cards Question?

I want to get a new video card for my PC. I was doing a little research and fell upon the Power Mac G5 from Apple. When I was looking at the specs of the computer it said it had 3 video cards but all different.

My question is, What are the benefits of having 2 or more video cards that are different. Not the same but different. One of the cards was an ATI with 256 MB and one was Nvidia with 1GB. Why are they different models and from different companies (and why are they different memories?)|||I think you are misinterpreting what you read.

The computer doesn't come with 3 video cards, you have a choice of one of the video cards. They offer 3 choices.|||Nvidia and ATI specialize in different specs. I know I use the Power Mac (which is utterly amazing BTW...it seems to open applications before I press them its that fast :P) and I game with it on bootcamp, and so all the VRAM combined adds up to the best graphics out there. Things like Pixel Shading and Vertex Shading quality can depend on the brand. I really don't know all that well why, but I do know that what ever the reason is it sure is hell working for me!

Upgrading Video Card on Mac?

I have a mac that I downloaded TF2 on, which has a minimum requirement of a NVIDIA GeForce 8 or ATI X1600. I bought my mac a few years ago, so it has an Intel GMA X3100. Is there a way to upgrade the card itself to increase its abilities, or do I have to buy another card? If the latter, what would be a capable card for a college student with minimum wages? Thanks.|||There's no way to upgrade the graphics card on any laptop, Mac or Windows. First of all, you have an integrated graphics card. It's not actually a separate chip, it's a part of the motherboard. Second, if you were to try to upgrade the card, you'd have to pull the whole computer apart.

Mac G4 video card advice?

Hey Mac lovin' guys and girls I need some advice. I have a dual 450MHz G4 with over a gig of ram and the original ATI Rage128Pro 16MB video card. I'm tired of the sometimes stuttering video and assume it's the fault of the whopping 16MB of V-ram and I want to get a new (or used) video card but I'm at a bit of a loss trying to figure out what kind I should get. Would 128MB card be good, should I look for a 256MB card? What brands are best, ATI, NVidia, others?

I don't game. I do watch a lot of video using, streaming and downloaded avi, mpegs, wmv and so on. I mostly use VLC and Quicktime Pro to watch.

Any help will be much appreciated.

You aren't trying to watch 1920x1200 native res. videos, are you? If so, you'll need at least a 1.8 Ghz Core2Duo processor, plus a decent video card, or at least a 2.66 Ghz Core2Duo, if using onboard video.

For 3rd party drivers take a look at the forums over at netkas.org - a 6970 is going to be the best you can get I think.

The next Mac Pros will come in the next few months, but the sooner they come the more likely they will just use 6000 series cards. Is a video card to blame for choppy video and sound on a mac?

I have a 128 mb video card and when i try to play video on final cut and quicktime, its real choppy and stop-n-go.

Is there anyway to fix this without buying a new card?|||That is a pretty fat video card for a mac. I have a 32 MB video on a mac mini with a 20 inch display. Unless I try full screen it works very well. Maybe you are streaming, that relies on the download speed of your modem. Maybe your source media (DVD or hd) has corrupt or fragmented files. I don't expect the card is the issue all alone.

Mac video card Geforce# vs vid. ram#?

I have a mac book pro, with 2.5 gigahertz, 4 gigabite, and Geforce 8600, but only has 256 Mb video card ram. Do you think that's good enough for like graphic designing, and game play, like the high end. Just let me know how bad a 256 mb ram of videocard could hurt my game play, if it does at all. compare it to 7600 geforce, and like 1 gb ram. I don't know how to determine...

Does any Video card work on a Mac Pro?

will PC video card(say the new GeForce 8800 GTX) work on a Mac Pro w/ boot camp? will it run w/ OS X?|||My first question is what are you doing that needs that much video support? Due to the architecture of the mac video system and the fact that it accomplishes everything at roughly twice the speed of a comparable PC CPU, (Windows is NOT an OS. It is still a shell requiring translation in and out of DOS.) a mac video card actually runs the video faster than a twice as a comparable PC video card.

My old NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 in a 2 year old G5 1.6 ghz has higher frame rates while supporting a pair of 19" LCDs than a friend's brand new 3 ghz PC running the same games on his Nvidia GeForce 8800GTS with twice the available bandwidth and a single 19" LCD.

BTW: many PC video cards do work in Macs. All that is needed is the manufacturer (or in some cases a 3rd party) to write a driver and it becomes plug and play!!! Getting my first iMac, are video cards and RAM easy to install in them?

I'm a graphics student looking to save money where I can. I want to purchase an iMac with a fast processor but I dont want to get "extras" that I can buy cheaper elsewhere and install myself. I noticed it would cost a student $158 for 2gb memory, when I know I can purchase 2gb of ram from crucial for $89! So.. that would be a waste of money. But I have never owned a Mac.. are video cards and ram easy to install in them?

Also, I'm sort of frustrated with the apple store because the only way I can get a 2.33 GHz processor is if I get a 24-inch display when I can just get a larger one later on. Also, it only even gives me the option to choose a vidoe card is if I choose the largest display. Is there a way or another place where I can truly customize my iMac to my liking?|||RAM is easy to install, all you do is unscrew a small panel on the bottom and pop it in. Also, be very careful about what type of RAM you get...iMacs are notoriously picky about compatibility with third party RAM.

Other than that, iMacs are not user serviceable. You cant swap optical drives, hard drives, graphics cards or anything else. RAM is pretty much the only thing you can install yourself, so just get all the options you want on it when you buy it, b/c you'll be stuck with whatever you buy. Its money well spent though, macs hold their value and are super reliable.

As far as processor goes, you really wont notice much difference between the 2.33 GHz and the next model down processor. I was using a 1.86 GHZ Core Duo 2 last year with 1GB RAM at my job and the thing flew.

If you're doing serious graphic work though, and you want a more customizable machine, maybe look at the Mac Pro? Apple sets the standards with options so pretty much no matter where you buy you'll have the same options. The Apple store will give you a bit more flexibility in choice.|||If you want a customizable system, get a Mac Pro. You don't get as many choices in the consumer space. As for an iMac... RAM isn't hard to upgrade. Video cards are another story. You could try Apple resellers to see if you can find more options, but I doubt it. What's wrong with 1GB of RAM? It works fine for me. It's not Windows Vista, you don't need 4GB of RAM just to run the operating system.

Mac Pro compatible video card?

I have Mac Pro w/ dual Quad Xeon processors.

I got it for free but came with no HDD, memory nor Video card.

For HDD, I have Seagate SATA 250GB.

For RAM, I have AData 240 pin Fully Buffered 2GB DDR2 x 2 sticks

For video, I have ATi Radeon HD2560 w/1GB memory for PCIe.

And there is NOTHING on dispaly.

(Fans run, front LED on, Boot sound, HDD spining)

Later I found Mac Pro uses different ROM from video card,

and regular video card might be able to use after driver loaded,

but I don't even have OS installed.

So anyone knows any (decent) video card which will work out of box for Mac PRo???

I appreciate your help in advance.|||Looking into this myself at the moment, though for a dual Dual Xeon that came with an NVidia GeForce 7300 GT. Here's what i've been able to gather so far.

ATI 1900 XT - was an upgrade option and still is, (might be old for an octo-core), but apparently not terribly impressive performance or heat dissipation for the money anyway

ATI HD 3870 - ATI100435928 - 512 MB - About $230 - latest and greatest, especially with 'core video' apps - same model for PC or Mac

ATI 2600 X - Stock on new machines - Less ZING than the others but significantly less money ~$130

NVidia GeForce 8800 GT - 512 MB (make sure you get the version for your 8 core machine; not the 4 core 2006 jobs) - About $280 - Faster for games (especially under windoze) than the ATI 3870, but only about the same with 'core video' apps, though Apple & NVidia are working on the drivers to remedy this... maybe

NVidia Quadro FX 4500 (or 5600 in your case) - superior juice, but only for folks with deep pockets since it will knock you back about $2600

You should be careful here. All other cards are iffy or incompatible. Some PC cards can be flashed for Mac but it's not for the faint of heart. Some cards will work great if you're running windoze under Boot Camp, but will give you nothing but a black screen under OS X.

Unfortunately, video card selection is one of the Mac user's biggest lingering gripes. I've been waiting months for the backward compatible 8800 GT to show, and now that it has, i'm researching more because i hadn't heard about this new PC+MAC ATI 3870 for only $230. Will definitely scream on an octo-core, but don't know about quad-core.

Thanks for your help|||The Newegg 285 wouldn't work because Apple only programs their drivers for certain things and then locks out everything else.

This is one reason I don't like Apple, go try to put even a CD drive in >.<|||I'm going to say no. I suppose it could just be a case of finding the Mac drivers online, but I tend to believe that the card would have to have some kind of EFI chip on it to work with the Mac. I'm no expert at EFI or GPU architecture, but even though Macs are intel based now, they still use EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) instead of a BIOS and I think that would have to be addressed at the hardware level, not just with the drivers.

There may be a hack to make it work, but it'd be better just to find the Mac edition.

How do I check what type of video card I have on my Mac?

Can the Mac Pro use ANY video card in Boot Camp (booting to XP or Vista)?

I am interested in a Mac Pro to have for video editing, photography, musical composition, office work....and last but not least, gaming. I know that the X1900XT card is the only serious gaming card that Apple provides for the machine. But I don't care about gaming in OSX. I want to game in Windows -- booting into it through Boot Camp.

So, can I add a video card that will work in XP *only*? That would be great if it could. I've heard that the new 8800GTX card pulls too much power for the Mac's PCIe slot to handle, so that's a bummer. I've also heard that the PCIe in the Mac Pro is limited to only x8 speed, where everything in the PC world is at x16. So that's also a bummer. But those things might not matter if I can be assured that any OTHER card will work under XP, albeit limited to x8 bandwidth.

Anyone try this?|||You can use any hardware in Windows XP, as long as it fits the Mac Pro's Hardware specifications. When choosing a hardware device to use in windows on a mac, look at your computer's hardware information as if it were a PC. Any video card that you add will work in XP, however it might also show up in OS X.

Question on Mac video cards?

I am looking to buy a more advanced video card as the one I currently have is only a NVidia GeForce 7300 GT with only 128 MB of VRAM. I need to know what is the best possible alternate to this, money is not the biggest issue, but I will be using a Boot Camp for windows on my Mac also.

Its a iMac by the way with Intel Core 2 Duo and 2.16 GHz. Will I need to bring it into a shop to install the new card? Thanks for the info in advance. :)|||I don't think it is doable. If it is a new imac then almost everything is saudered to the board. If this is the case then you cant update anything other than ram and hdd.
